When is an update enough, and when does a rebuild pay off?
An update is enough when the foundation holds: the site is fast, works on a phone and can be edited, but the text, images or prices are out of date. Rebuild when the site is slow, awkward on a phone, relies on outdated plugins or a theme, or when every change costs more than it brings in.
We look at the site with you and tell you what we think. If an update is enough, we say so, even when a rebuild would have been a bigger job for us.
- Update: new text, images, prices or an extra page on a site that otherwise works
- Update: the odd error, broken links or a contact form that has stopped working
- Rebuild: the site is hard to use on a phone or loads slowly
- Rebuild: the theme or plugins are no longer updated, or nobody knows how the site is built
Why doesn’t my website show up on Google?
According to Google, the site may be new and not yet crawled, few other sites may link to it, it may be hard to crawl, or something may be blocking Google. Search for site:yourdomain.se to see whether your pages are in the index. Search Console shows errors that get in Google’s way.
Being in the index doesn’t mean ranking well. That comes down to content that answers what customers search for, clear page titles, speed and local visibility. Our SEO page covers it in more detail.
How do I keep my Google rankings when the site is rebuilt?
By pointing every old address at its new equivalent with a permanent redirect, known as a 301. Google recommends keeping the redirects in place for at least a year. Also update internal links, submit a new sitemap in Search Console and expect rankings to fluctuate for a while.
According to Google, a medium-sized site can take a few weeks or more to appear with its new addresses, and large sites longer. If a page keeps the same address, it needs no redirect.
- List every old address before anything changes
- Point each old address straight at its new equivalent, without redirect chains
- Update internal links and the links in ads and social profiles
- Submit the new sitemap in Search Console
Can you take over an existing WordPress site?
Yes. We can update an existing WordPress site or rebuild it. First we go through the theme, plugins and content and see what is worth keeping. Then we propose whatever gives you the most for your money: staying on WordPress with updates, or rebuilding the site with a custom design.
To take over, we need logins for WordPress and for the hosting. If we rebuild, we move across the content you want to keep and make sure the old addresses point to the right place.
What does it cost to update a website?
Small changes cost SEK 995 an hour excluding VAT, with a minimum charge of one hour. If you need changes every month, Hosting Plus costs SEK 1 490 a month and includes two hours of changes. A rebuild is priced as a new package: Basic from SEK 14 900 or Complete from SEK 29 900 excluding VAT.
A rebuild always gets a fixed price in writing before we start, and the price does not change as long as the scope stays the same.
- Hourly rate: SEK 995 excl. VAT, one hour minimum
- Hosting Plus: SEK 1 490/month, hosting, backups, updates and two hours of changes
- Basic: from SEK 14 900, up to 5 pages, done in 2–3 weeks
- Complete: from SEK 29 900, up to 12 pages, two languages and 30 days of support after launch
How do I move my website to another host?
First copy the files and database to the new host and test the site there before changing anything. Then point the domain at the new server by changing the DNS at your registrar. Only cancel the old hosting once everything works, and check that your email moves too if it sits with the same provider.
If you would rather not look after hosting yourself, Hosting and support costs SEK 490 a month and covers hosting within the EU, SSL, backups, updates and monitoring.
- Make sure you have logins for the domain, the hosting and the site
- Take a full backup before the move
- Test the site on the new host before the DNS is changed
- Check the email settings so that your email keeps working
